After finishing second to Hinkle at the JCC Pre-School race, Woodside High's Brian Derr was the overall winner of the Peninsula Track Club's 5K by the Bay, organized and hosted by the Riverside Rehabilitation Institute in Newport News. On a flat, but windy, course along waters of Chesapeake Avenue, Derr won in 18:17 over Steve Chantry (18:39) and Norman Stiegler (18:45).

For the women the top three were Margarita Doreste (20:45), Shelly Arnoldi (21:06) and Sarah Chapman (21:21). The walk category winners were George Fenigsohn (30:41) and Kathy Daiber (29:37). First wheelchair was Mathew Barber, (18:28). There were 322 total finishers in the 5K.
